Vector graphics

What is vector graphics?

Vector graphics are one of the two types of graphics in the modern design world. Compared to raster graphics, which are based on pixels, vector graphics allow you to create images that can be continuously scaled without losing quality.

General characteristics of vector graphics

Vector graphics is an essential tool in the modern world of design and illustration. It uses vectors – mathematical objects. The main feature of vector graphic is that each object has a description that allows you to change its size and shape without losing quality. This makes it an important tool for designing logos, icons, web graphics, and illustrations. In addition, vector files are small in size, which makes them easy to store and transfer on the Internet.

Advantages of vector graphics

Vector graphics have several obvious advantages that make them an indispensable tool for many designers and illustrators.

  • One of the most important advantages of vector graphic is the ability to scale images without any loss of quality. This means that you can increase or decrease the size of an image by any amount and it will remain sharp and clear.
  • Small file size: Vector graphic files are usually small, especially compared to raster images. This makes them easier to store, transfer over the Internet, and process on different devices.
  • Vector files are easy to edit because each object can be edited separately. You can change the shape, size, colors, and other parameters of objects without losing quality and detail.
  • Lots of tools and features. Vector programs have a wide range of tools and features that allow you to create complex and detailed illustrations, logos, infographics, and more.
  • From digital drawings to vector icons, the possibilities of vector graphic are endless.

Disadvantages of vector graphic

While there are many advantages to vector graphics, there are a few disadvantages to consider:

  • One of the main limitations of vector graphics is its inability to render photorealistic images. Vector objects are made up of mathematical objects, so they can’t accurately reproduce complex details and shadows like raster images can.
  • Compared to raster graphic, creating complex textures, shadows, and other special effects in vector programs can be more difficult and time-consuming. Some complex effects that are easy to create in raster graphics can be difficult to create in vector graphics programs.
  • Vector also have limitations in rendering images with a lot of detail. A large number of details can lead to an increase in file size and program freezes, especially when working with large projects.
  • Vector objects are usually stored in relation to the scale of the coordinate grid. This can be a problem if you need to reproduce an image on a large scale, because resizing can affect the placement and proportions of objects.
  • Finally, while vector graphic are ideal for creating logos, illustrations, and infographics, they can be less efficient for editing and processing photos than raster graphics. Raster editors usually have more tools and features for working with photos.

Vector graphics and raster graphics are the two main technologies used to create digital images, but they have different principles of construction and application.

How vector graphics differ from raster graphics

First of all, the main difference between vector and raster graphics is the way images are stored and displayed. Vector graphic are based on the use of objects such as lines, curves, and shapes that are stored as vectors. These objects can be easily scaled without losing quality.

On the other hand, raster graphics are based on the use of pixels, small dots that are stored in a grid. Each pixel has specific coordinates and color, and together they form an image. Because raster images are built on pixels, they have a fixed resolution and can be lost when scaled.

In addition, vector graphic and raster graphics have different applications. Vector graphic are ideal for creating logos, illustrations, infographics, and other images that need to be scaled or edited without losing quality. On the other hand, raster graphics are better suited for working with images that have a lot of detail and texture.

Programs for working with vector graphic

Vector graphic programs are specialized applications that allow users to create, edit, and manipulate vector images. Here are some of the most popular programs for vector graphics:

  • Adobe Illustrator: This is one of the most well-known and powerful programs for creating vector images. Adobe Illustrator has a wide range of tools for drawing, creating shapes and objects, as well as for creating illustrations and logos.
  • CorelDRAW: Another popular vector graphic program, CorelDRAW is known for its ease of use and many features. It has a wide range of tools for creating and editing vector objects, and also includes design and layout tools.
  • Affinity Designer: This program has powerful features for creating vector illustrations, logos, and other graphic designs. Affinity Designer has an intuitive interface and many useful tools for working with vector graphics.
  • Sketch: This is a program specialized in web design. Although not as full-featured as Illustrator or CorelDRAW, Sketch is a powerful tool for creating vector layouts and interfaces.
